New Tobermory post office welcomed

key_post_office.jpgTobermory's new Post Office will open on Monday (February 2) and the news has been welcomed by Alan Reid MP.
"Not only is a Post Office a vital asset to a community, I know from my experience as an MP for 14 years that any suggestion of change to, or loss of, a Post Office causes worry and uncertainty, especially for older and more vulnerable customers," said Mr Reid.
The new venue will be at Sugar Rush, a shop at Hu's Gate in Tobermory at the entrance to Ledaig car park, some 200 metres along the Main Street from the original premises.
The entrance to the shop will be improved and once inside a hearing loop and space for a wheelchair are to be created.
David Duff, the Post Office Ltd advisor charged with finding a new home for the town's post office told Mr Reid: "It is important to recap on the reason for our proposal; that the existing premises are no longer available for Post Office use and the move of the branch will enable us to maintain a Post Office presence in Tobermory. We searched extensively for an alternative location and identified these premises as the best that was available to us that could fulfil our requirements.
"I have carefully considered my original proposal, and the feedback received during the public consultation period.  I am confident that the new service can meet the needs of our customers in Tobermory whilst enabling us to maintain local access to our services to the local community."
The new post office will offer all the same services but not the National Lottery; customers can still collect benefits in cash using the Post Offices everyday banking services or Post Office card account.
The Argyll and Bute MP added: "When there was a threat last August that Tobemory could be left without a Post Office, I stepped in and told the Post Office that they could not leave Tobermory without a post office. I’m pleased that they listened to me.
“The Post Office know there have been some people who are concerned there is no pavement outside the new premises, but I understand improvements such as road markings are being investigated.”
Newspapers might wish to refer to their own files from the end of May 2013 for further background into this story.
The Post Office advises that the  current branch will close at 13:00 on Wednesday 28 January 2015, with the new branch opening, at Hu’s Gate, at 09:00 on Monday 2 February 2015.  If there are any unforeseen  schedule changes which mean these dates change posters will be displayed in branch to let  customers know.
