Alan Reid, Liberal Democrat candidate for Argyll & Bute, has welcomed the Scottish Government’s U-turn on cuts to funding for Scotland’s largest rural youth organisation, the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs (SAYFC).
Scottish Liberal Democrats had called on the Scottish Government to think again about its plan to end its annual £66,000 grant to the SAYFC, a call that has now been heeded.
Speaking after Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead announced a £30,000 funding package to provide agricultural training opportunities, Mr Reid said:
“The Scottish Government’s U-turn on its decision to completely cut funding to the Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs is certainly a welcome change, but the Scottish Government have still halved its grant to a body that provides a crucial network for thousands of young farmers.
“This drop in support must not continue year-on-year."
