In a speech to the Annual General Meeting of the Argyll & Bute Liberal Democrats in Inveraray, Scottish party leader, Willie Rennie said,
“Month by month the people who live in Argyll and Highland are seeing the cost of not having a strong liberal voice to challenge the Scottish Government.
“Argyll and the Highlands have seen a multi-million pound price tag from having the SNP in power.
“The SNP, Labour and the Greens voted to increase council taxes in Argyll & Bute and Highland by millions of pounds yet send the money to the central belt.
“On the council tax, Highland will lose out on over a million pounds a year and Argyll & Bute will miss out on £1.2million every year.
“This is because the proceeds from the SNP’s council tax hike get siphoned off from Argyll and the Highlands.”
The increase in the rates of council tax for Band E properties and above will cost residents in Highland and Argyll & Bute from next April. The money is being taken by the Scottish Government and allocated largely to education services in the central belt. This means that communities in Highland and Argyll and Bute will pay in more than they get back.
Argyll and Bute will lose out on £1.2 million a year. This is because the hike will raise £2.4 million a year there but analysis shows it is set to only get £1.2 million a year back.
